fruit de pain en Guadeloupe
17 May 2016
As the latitude ticks down we continue to have new experiences. We are now in the 17's in Des Haies, Guadeloupe.
A homeless man spent a great deal of time telling me about his deceased family and the fact that he needed money and that I should buy his breadfruit. All in French of course, not much English here. I bought a huge one for 2 Euros.
Next was a half hour search on the internet and youtube to see just what to do with it. I learned how to skin it and wash the Elmer's glue-like substance off my hands. The grill was lit and slices were marinating in sour orange, salt and goat pepper.
A squall came in which kept blowing out the grill. Such is life on a boat. So down to the galley to fry the slices in oil.
Lisa said, "Let's sprinkle them with Parm cheese." We did and looked forward to a French West Indies treat. Well....they tasted like nothing. A further check on Google indicated that they were high in vitamin C. So we've got that going for us.
