These Are a Few of My Favorite Things, 1.
13 February 2017
I thought I would put together what really makes life great on Uproar. Hope this is of interest to those who don't intend to cruise and helpful for those who do.
Number one on the list is my Valentine, crew, wife and soul mate. No way would this be possible without Lisa. People sometimes ask, “How does your wife like cruising?” or “How did you convince your wife to go cruising?” Lisa was pushing to go cruising harder and earlier than I was. Years ago, she said, “Let's just sell everything and go!” I'm the one who wanted a home base which did delay the cruise a few years.
One day Lisa said to me, “We aren't really going cruising are we.” My reply was that it wasn't just up to me and yes we would go cruising. That challenge made me think about the necessary steps. First step is to get the boat so I started a 6 month search which led to buying Uproar. Next was buying the River Retreat, our downsize, river house that we just love. The Santa Monica Blvd, Whitefish Bay house needed some work and decorating. That was completed, sold and we were well on our way.
But back to Lisa. She has a lot of sailing experience and won many women's offshore races and season series. I can totally rely on her sailing skills. I met two guys, long term cruisers, who said if they fell overboard, their wife would not be able to turn the boat around and pick them up! Lisa is also well versed in the operation of our equipment. She knows when something doesn't sound right with the engine or rigging. She knows when sails need trimmed (adjusted) or changed. And like me, she loves to sail fast!
We live in a tiny space. The tiny house trend has nothing on us. We envy their space! There are weeks at a time when Lisa and I are never out of sight from each other. Yet we don't feel cramped or annoyed by each other. Well, I should just speak for myself. Speaking of cramped, our storage space is quite large for a sailboat but we have the motto, “We will lack for nothing.” Lisa can make cargo disappear in the hold of Uproar. We sometimes get carried away shopping, especially in the French West Indies. We get back to the boat and unload our goodies in the main salon. Lisa just wants me to leave her alone and before long everything is packed away where she mostly knows where to find it.
While Lisa is a sailor, she is also wife and motherly toward me and Sophie when needed (or wanted). She delights in making me a big breakfast, even when she doesn't eat it herself. Her eggs with Aunty Lisa's Lightening Sauce are the best. She is fanatical about clean sheets and laundry. Sure makes life comfortable. We do have boy jobs and girl jobs on the boat but she is whittling away at the exclusively boy jobs.
Lisa, I love you and wouldn't possibly be able to live aboard without you.
Happy Valentines Day,
