We went to the Immigration office this morning. We had an appointment with our "agent" to be there at 10am. She was a no-show. What happened during our several hours there is a long, complicated story. There seems to have been some under the table stuff going on before the new staff was hired. (A few months ago the Federal government came in and fired everyone in the office. They had one day to vacate the building.) Fortunately three of the four new staff members speak English so it was easy to communicate. When I showed them the paperwork our agent had given us last May they were really confused and said what was done was illegal and they couldn't understand how it had happened. Then they went to look for our files.
Jeff and I were standing at the counter and it was clear that this was something out of the ordinary. Soon all four were working on our problem and two of them were looking in filing cabinets for our files. In the meantime, the line behind us of impatient Americans was growing longer. When I turned around ALL the chairs were filled and people were standing. About 30 in all. We got there at 10am and left around 1pm. Finally they found Jeff's file inside someone else's and they were able to process it right then, so he's legal until November 1, 2011. Mine is still lost and we have to go back tomorrow after 1pm. The head guy thinks our files were "hidden".
Oh well....it will get worked out tomorrow. Either they will find the file or I will have to get pictures done again, print our bank statement to prove we have income and pay another $120. Sheesh.
Right now Jeff and I are off for a ride and a walk on the beach.
