West Palm Beach
Today was a day we aside to go ashore to restock, visit with our friend, explore the area, and have dinner ashore. We decided this would best be accomplished by taking the big boat to the dock instead of loading the dingy with all the heavy items to take back to the boat. We discussed it the previous night and decided we would get to the dock early so we could get the spot we wanted.
But first a boat bath. We had closed the boat the previous night, so it was warm down below. We decided to take a nth topside. We put up privacy curtains and showed our redneck ways in amongst the million-dollar yachts in West Palm Beach 🙄.
Now to get the boat to the dock. We attached the lines to the port side because the captain had decided we would slide right into the dock. After circling a few times and discussing the tide was stronger than we thought, we made our approach. Let us just say it did not go as planned. I realized we were approaching the dock quickly, “are we out of control?”, just as I saw the anchor ram into the metal piling. From that I would say we tied up quickly with only minimal damage. A bent screw on the anchor chain and a deep ding on the fiberglass. Later one of our boat neighbors came by to tell us how impressed she was with our docking skills. Not sure if she was being facetious or if things look differently from a distance 😂.
We able to get most of our supplies from Walmart except there was extraordinarily little water. According to the information we had, there was blue green algae in the water supply and residents have been advised not to drink the water.
Out to dinner at the Waterway Café then got the drive over to Palm Beach. A visit to Palm Beach would not have been complete with a drive by Mar-A-Lago. After our 4th pass in front of the place we decided maybe the guards at the gate were giving us the evil eye so with mission complete we returned to the boat.
If you are ever in the area and you are not sure which of the mansions behind the privacy hedges belong to the President, look for the large American flag flying proudly. The story behind the flag is that he put up a 50 ft flagpole and the city council told him he could only have a 30 ft pole. They fined him a $1000 a day until the fine reached $120,000. He went to the city council and told them he would lower the flag to 30 ft if he could donate the fine to the Veterans Affairs; they agreed. He took the 50 ft pole down and hired a landscape crew to come in and build a 20 ft hill and he put up a 30 ft pole on the 20 ft hill. Win, win! Fact check shows part of the story to be true but who knows the full truth….
