Ft Lauderdale-University Cove

Three days in Ft Lauderdale and the repair to the holding tank successful, we are now ready to leave this concrete jungle and run the bridge gauntlet. We had first thought we would anchor for the night and go outside for a sail. However, the weather has been iffy and the seas running rough. After some discussion we felt it better to proceed on the ICW because the weather forecast is unpredictable and not favorable to sailing.
We left the marina about 1030, stopped for diesel at the 17th Bridge. We had a delay at the fuel dock waiting for the Fire and Rescue to fuel up. The wind and current once again did not work in our favor for docking. After getting our diesel, Charles and the dockhand had a discussion about how to get off the dock with the dockhand telling him he has done this a time or two (silent giggle). After the Captain exhausted his calculations, he went with the recommendations of the dockhand…. success (another silent giggle).
Port Everglades was impressive. We watched as a freighter prepared to load a sailboat to take overseas. That is the way to do a crossing! Cruise ships preparing for reopening in July following the Covid shutdown.
We have absolutely no sense of timing when it comes to bridge openings. Some open on demand, some on hour and half hour, others on quarter and three quarters. They are spaced just far enough apart to make it hard on a slow-moving boat like us. We only made it 20 miles today, but we dropped anchor in a beautiful cove with beautiful clear aqua blue water. A lot of boats in the anchorage as well as the sand islands just off Haulover Inlet. Does anyone work? Midafternoon on Tuesday…. I guess some people are still working from home…
The big thrill of the day was having 4 manatees’ surface near the boat! Wow!
