We left Charleston this morning on the ICW. We spent yesterday walking around the old city. Such a cool city, so much history, its hard to take it all in.
The intercoastal water way from here to Florida meanders between river deltas. There is always current, sometimes its with you ad your going 7.5 knts and then you cross a water shed and you against the current going 3.5 for hours. Because of the currents there are also lots of variable shoals. The charts read 14 ft of water but you are ploughing mud in "0" feet under the keel.
We had all of it today and in the end ended up stuck because of shallow water well before our intended stop for the night. It all worked out. We found a place to anchor while a Dolphin swam by and then a few minutes later we spotted an Alligator swimming beside the boat. Really!! Eva didn't believe me either unti she came on deck and saw it herself. Not scary though it was only about 3 ft long. Still fun to see.
After getting organized we went fishing with the throw net Eva got me for fathers day. I've tried and tried to catch something with this net and today it finally paid off. We took the zodiak up a creek and within 5 casts of the net we had 16 or 20 shrimp. They weren't too big but we caught them and it was alot of fun. Back at the boat we cleaned them up and Tracy cooked them in some sort of special way with old bay seasoning and they were wonderful.
Next time we just need to catch more.
