18 December 2014 | Allans Cay- Normans Cay
Tom
Our first week in the Bahamas has been wonderful! Great weather and fantastic snorkeling. We spent 2 days at Allans Cay played on the beach, swam and explored. We saw our first sharks here. Tracy saw a small black tipped reef shark and I saw a medium sized Lemon shark. The underwater life is very healthy here lots of fish, eels conch etc.
Allans Cay has a population of rare iguanas that are not shy. They are about 3 feet long and come right up to you on the beach. Eva was impressed by them.
We left Allans and moved a couple hours south to Normans Cay. In the early 70's this island was the home base for Columbian cocaine smuggler Carlos Lehder. The ruins of his estate can still be explored along with a drug plane that crashed on take off. Its in about 15 feet of water and is now home to great schools of fish.
The beaches here are indescribable. Powder white sand that goes on and on framed by rocky cliffs and green palms. The guys from 2 other boats and myself decided to try hunting again. So the next morning we headed outside (Ocean side of the island) to deeper water an area more difficult to dive in but hopefully there will be lobster. We were rewarded with 8 big lobsters in about an hour. This was very exciting I finally managed to spear a couple after several failed attempts. Definitely not as easy as it looks.
This success turned into a beach BBQ with everyone from the crews of Charolette, MoMo and Sheila Sharing BBQ'd Lobster and Fresh conch. It was a great afternoon complete with a bonfire on the beach and roasted marshmallows.
