Dinghy Dock

12 February 2019 | Jolly Harbor Marina Antigua, West Indies
82*F, wind 16mph, humidity 78%
Looking east past our new neighbor Dave from Canada, we watch as stalwart sailors brave the intermittent rain showers to tie up at the dinghy dock next door. As you can see it is a busy place probably because it is so centrally located – supermarket across street, and easy walking distance to two restaurants – Melinis which you can see in the photo and Crow’s Next – both run by Italians and both cater to the cruisers with great WiFi connections for the price of a libation.

Dave and helper Tony have promised to help with off loading our old batteries and onloading the new – thank goodness as those are heavy suckers!

Beach Beautiful

After putting up the binimi on Sunday 2/10/19, we took a walk to the Jolly Harbor Beach where you see Peter scoping out the beautiful white sands in a beautiful setting of turquoise sea, blue skies dotted with billowy white clouds and the lush hills in the background – beautiful!

Busy Week

11 February 2019 | Jolly Harbor Marina Antigua, West Indies
Today, as we installed the dodger around the companionway hatch and door (helps protect against rain, sun & heat entering galley just below) we watched as the Aussie men on the two boats (with black fiber composite masts) next to us continued their constant maintenance on their racing hulls. On TwoLoose we now leave “going up the mast” to younger and more agile folk than us!
Last Sunday, while the locals are fervently watching the multi-day cricket match between their local team (WIndies) and England on their Antigua soil, Americans in residence watched the Super Bowl in bars all around the island. We watched with other Island Packers (Watermark III and Island Time), cruisers and landlubbers in the Crow’s Nest Bar adjacent to the JHM.
Earlier this week, Pete fixed the a/c and water heater! Annette continues titivating (never ending job) and getting the boat habitable. After two years on the hard things are not as we’d like to live with. Fortunately just a little extra elbow grease is required.

Bigger Wrench!

All he needed was a bigger wrench to open the through hulls for the aft head – happy sailor again!

TwoLoose in Antiguan Berth

02 February 2019 | Jolly Harbor Marina Antigua, West Indies
Our first full day onboard after her launching was filled with the usual tasks of prepping the boat for living aboard.

While Pete flushed the fresh water system with Clorox to kill any little “bugs” that took up residence in our absence, AB continued cleaning, titivating and putting things in their “proper” places – to include finding the pole in the MESSY quarter berth (aka garage) on which to attach the American flag and put her on the stern – flapping beautifully in the breeze. We placed numerous bottles of water in the refrig to keep us going in the heat.

Our biggest bug a boo continues to be the a/c as the water level in the system had fallen during her time on the hard-not unusual. But the cover which needs to be loosened is not easy to move – so we are trying WD-40 overnight and a larger tool tomorrow.

We reconnected with the owners of Pengally and Island Time… the latter offering us a place at a table in Crow’s Nest tomorrow night for the Super Bowl. Ironically, we met them here in JHM 2 years ago just in time to join them at a bar just outside the marina called the Underdog. Nice Folks.

After almost 5 weeks on island, we finally got TwoLoose in the water today! Yippee!

We motored safely to our new berth (A-38) in the JHM testing the bow thruster along the way, and then tested the air conditioning at the berth. Last but not least - we lit off the reefer/freezer. Unfortunately, the a/c needs some more work but we will survive the heat - as we did for most of our summers in the Med.

All along we've noted several other Island Packet Yachts in the boat yard, marina and buoy field. So we looked around and discovered S/Y Island Time and S/Y Pengally on the pier next to ours with S/Y Mandalay and Watermark III on our pier. Turns out we'd met all of them the last time we were here - making them our first sailing acquaintances with Caribbean sailing experience. We intend to shamefully pick their collective minds for recommendations on all sorts before getting underway.

We think our first objective after getting underway will be the island of Dominica in time for the SSCA Gam at the end of February. It has been about 7 years since our most recent Gam (classically defined as "a visit or friendly conversation at sea/ashore especially between whalers OR a school of whales) which was held near Annapolis.

Needless to say we are looking forward to moving out of the Airbnb apartment we unluckily fell into -Sunday if not Saturday.

TwoLoose's Photos - Main
We flew to Cancun, MX to join Peter's eldest daughter (Cindi) and her family for an Island Christmas before we flew off to Antigua to rejoin the boat after a 2 year absence. Cindi's husband, Arturo, son Andres (22) and daughter Amaya (18) and their collection of animals (1 horse, 2 cats, 3 dogs and only one male amongst them!) all made us feel quite welcome. It had been TOO long since seeing them.

After 21 days (including Christmas & NYE) at sea S/V TwoLoose with Captain Pete, Crew Bob “Hokie” Baran and Crew Annette arrived Jolly Harbor, Antigua. The crossing from Pasito Blanco, Grand Canary was basically uneventful. We used the jib the entire transit - never put up the main and motored only a few days in the beginning as we escaped the wind shadow created by the Canary Islands. Winds & seas were predominantly from the NE (as predicted); on our starboard quarter creating the somewhat unnerving “washing machine/corkscrewing” effect on boat & crew. Only serious impact was on Captain Pete who injured his back while refueling immediately before our departure. Thank goodness Bob had brought a back brace which Pete used to improve his mobility greatly!

TL's maintenance period started later than we would have preferred - for many reasons - none of which truly matter in the end. We're in it now and we will get the most of it even if we drift into warmer temps and delay the start of this season's cruising season.

To use the overused description: Awesome! Venice has not only the usual Italian charm & intriguing history, it is unique in it's watery ways and amazing feats of engineering! Like Rome there just isn't enough time to take it all in.
