Dolphins and our first night on the Atlantic

12 September 2017 | Delaware River
Sunny, calm and mild
Dolphins came out to greet us as we started our trip on the Atlantic. They literally come over to check out one's boat. Then they went over to check out Paradise Hunter.

The day and night were calm, with an occasional swell. Things were going so well, Roger started adding on to the trip. Why not? There are two of them so they can sleep. My sleep was mostly sitting up for 20 minutes at a time. After one nap in the middle of the night, I woke up to find myself being run over by my buddy boat, Paradise Hunter. They were supposed to be watching my back, not running over it.

Since we kept going, I was running out of fuel, so I dumped 10 gallons from the jerry jugs into my fuel tank. We finally anchored after 25 hours of motoring. We anchored in high tide, so we hope we calculated correctly and can leave tomorrow. We would like to leave at 9, but that is near low tide. Leaving at 8 gives us a needed foot more of water. So much for sleeping in!

The calm conditions gave me a chance to run the auto tuning on my auto pilot computer this morning. I felt the boat had been steering too much from side to side and not keeping a straight course. During the auto tuning, the computer takes over and figures out how much it has to turn the wheel to make the boat turn the way the computer wants. That little "learning" experience made the auto pilot steer much better.

Tonight will be an early night. Tomorrow there is another canal - but no locks. Happy, happy - joy, joy.
