Against the wind ... to Slaughter Creek
07 October 2017 | Slaughter Creek off Chesapeake Bay
Sunny, windy on the nose.
After weeks of being anchored in light north winds, we once again ventured south, on Tari’s birthday. And the wind was hard on the nose - from the south. In the afternoon it became apparent we wouldn’t make our chosen anchorage until dusk. I wasn’t keen on trying to find a place to anchor in someplace I’d never been before after sunset. Plus I was tired of motoring into wind and waves and going slow. The only place available to bail out to was on the other side of the bay. And to get to someplace sheltered required going through a crab field. Every 20-30 feet was another little buoy to miss, if you could even see it in the water with the wind whipped waves. It took us an hour to finally reach a protected spot.
I make sure my bedroom area never gets wet. But today, the window above my bed decided to leak for the first time. Ugh!
Before I went down below for the night, I checked my anchor line. I had a headlamp on with the red light. I kept seeing a weird type of fish swim by near the water surface. Then I realized they were crabs!
Tomorrow we should make it to the Potomac River. The wind is supposed to die down a bit.
