A walk on the wild side
02 November 2017 | Fort George Island Marina
Sunny and warm
What are the odds? A sailboat came in and tied up next to me, with a Lehr propane dinghy engine like mine. It is a rare sight, and to have two next to each other is even rarer. He is a solo sailor, but with a dog.
Gave the boat a fresh water rinse today to wash all the salt off.
I walked back to the marina next store to see if I could find the ball and get it rolling again on my broken shroud. I made some progress. Person A came to the boat and took pictures. He contacted person B and gave me their number. I called them. It sounded promising. His company had the word sail in their name and he called me back from the top of a mast.
My dock was littered with broken glass. I was trying to sweep it up and get it in the garbage. The marina finally came over and hosed it all into the water, with the other small debris laying in the cracks and crevices. During Hurricane Irma, a boat had launched itself on top of the piling at my slip. The wind and waves and tide had to be pretty high to do that.
It was getting late, but I tried to take a walk around the island. Fort George Island is a state park. It felt hot with no wind. After an hour, I turned back when the mosquitoes made it clear they were out for blood. Back at the boat there was a refreshing sea breeze, which did not make it inland at all. So I will have great sleeping weather without any A/C. Perfect. I don’t have A/C.
I spent some time trying to figure out my trip from now to New Years. Where to stay when, what airport to use, etc, as I want to get home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. If Melbourne calls me back and their rate page is correct, they may be my Florida home port for the rest of the year. My brother in Florida suggested that place after he did some digging. I’ll still cruise Florida outside of Melbourne, but that will be my port when I leave town.
