Gulf Stream crossing - sleepless in the Atlantic.
04 April 2018 | Heading to Fort Pierce
Sunny and clear when it isn’t raining.
Yesterday and today were flying fish day. Going to Chub Cay, I saw 10-15 flying fish in a group (gaggle? Flock? Herd? A bunch!) One fish skipped off a wave, like when you skip a stone. It looked painful. One figured out that if you fly head up and tail down, instead of being level, you can go a really long way.
Last night after the sun went down, it got dark. No, really - pitch black. On the plus side, it made for some great star gazing. Much later, the moon decided to make an appearance. I would say it was more than fashionably late. Be that as it may, the light it gave was most welcome. But it doesn't like to share, so it chased away almost all the stars.
Weird Gulf Stream weather. There was a stationary line of clouds with rain and a water spout. On one side was a south wind, on the other was a north wind. For awhile we were crossing with a NE wind and confused waves. Now the wind is east. We are still racing to get in before dark and thunderstorms. The wind has picked up, so with motor and headsail, we should make it. We need the wind to replace the Gulf Stream current we lost.
I'm tired and will end this. Not much sleep overnight. I tried to take a 20 minute nap before lunch, but my timing was poor. Half way through, the NOAA weather radio alert alarm went off - nap time was during their time and day to test.
