Escape from Port Resolution
21 August 2011 | Port Vila

We had a beautiful trip up the volcano but now we had to decide when and where to go. Port Resolution was a bit rolly with the wind coming more easterly and if we could believe the forecast, the wind was predicted to go up to 25 knots from the east. We had to make a decision. Either stay there and sit out the storm or move on to a better anchorage hopefully before it hit. With the girls visiting, we figured that it was more interesting to spend the next few days in Port Vila exploring the town. We walked around Port Resolution and checked out the village. People are so poor, living in grass huts, cooking on open fires, sleeping on woven mats. A real eye opener for the boys. In the afternoon, we went back to Tyee and prepared for an overnight trip, 125 miles to Port Vila. We left soon after having a late lunch. The wind had already picked up and the seas were pretty uncomfortable coming sideways to the boat. The girls were troopers and went to sleep with some good drugs. I also felt pretty seasick but managed to relieve John for a few hours during the night. The wind kept increasing to 35 knots. Tyee was flying and we had to reduce the sails just to keep it more comfortable with the sideway swell. We had the smallest main with 3 reefs and the genoa not much bigger. We arrived at Port Vila in the morning happy to be out of the big seas. We went inside the harbour and picked up a mooring with Yaching World. Port Vila is an awesome port. It is totally protected from all angles. Even though, it was so rough out to sea, in the harbour, it was flat and peaceful. We made a huge breakfast as not much was eaten since Tanna. After breakfast, we went to town and walked down the main road to the market and bought some beautiful fruit. A strange kind of raspberries and the most juiciest pineapple were appreciated by all. The next few days were rainy and windy and we were happy to be hiding in the safeness of Port Vila.
