Umnyama back in the water

30 November 2020
Dick van Geldere
On November 9, 2020 Umnyama was launched again after three months on the hard, lashed to the ground due to the hurricane season. After the momentary threat from Gonzalo, there has been no more significant winds. Elsewhere it was a record season. Most yachts stayed in the water in Grenada. The yachts that are still on the shore will probably also stay there, because of Covid. Everyone's plans fell through - fell into the water, we say in Dutch - until now. How further?
Close to the capital St Georges, we rented a comfortable apartment and a small car. Monique will write more about this later. Almost every day we drove to Grenada Marine in half an hour to work a little on the boat. We often got tired of that after a few hours in the heat. But yes, the ship needed maintenance, and also had to be pimped up for potential buyers, about which more in a next blog.

What did we do (little) and what did we do (a lot):
- Watermaker Repair: Replace "3-way production valve power supply control".
- Replacement rusty anchor - new Rocna anchor, now 25 kg. Replacement under excellent warranty.
- Replacement of rusted anchor chain, now 75 meters. Galvanizing was not possible here, in fact nowhere, maybe in Trinidad?
- Repair of the port dagger board. Insanely expensive repair to have it put on 55 cm, but done anyway because of the sale.
- Repair of the leaking dinghy bottom, by myself, with Final Fix, very expensive but good stuff. No more leaks so far.
- Replacement of the tricolor top light.
- Replacement of the deck light.
- Replacement of the anchor light. Was always weak, now very bright.
- Repair of a life line.
- Repair of the Parasailor, a huge job for Turbulence Grenada, including restoration of the mediocre repair at the time by Incidences in Martinique ...
- Repair of minimal wear on genoa, genakker and mainsail - with new tell-tales everywhere as they were quite worn out after 30k+ miles.
- It's funny that those new tell-tales are the most visible of all the expensive repairs, and the ones that give me the most pleasure - a few dollar tell-tales.
- Replacement of UV strips from genoa and genakker.
- Repair of the drum of the roller jib. Initially they said it should be replaced = standard answer. Now rolls like a charm again.
- Repair of a Raymarine i70 Instrument Display - finally a simple repair instead of replacing another Raymarine thing ...
- Repair of the antifouling of the underwater hull after that collision with that whale. In addition, reactivation sanding the Coppercoat antifouling.
- Finally installation of a new outboard motor! Huh? Yes, our new two-stroke 15HP Yamaha - the last in Australia - was stolen from the shipyard. Engine was locked under the boat. Grenada Marine is very safe and well-guarded, and nothing had been stolen in years. They felt very responsible and immediately ordered a new outboard motor for us. Much appreciated by us of course. Now even a Yamaha Enduro, the professional outboard that all fishermen have worldwide.

From Grenada Marine (SE-Grenada) we sailed to St Georges (W-Grenada) and anchored there in front of the most beautiful Caribbean beach: Grand Anse. More about that later.
