Luperon is a haven for expatriots from US and Canada. A mix, little bit of old hippie, some "off the grid", and a little anarchist. Luperon is like a black hole, cruisers sail in here for a short stop and never leave. There are few rules, nice people, beautiful country, and low cost of living. Did I mention we are selling the boat and buying a small house? Just kidding. We have too much Caribbean to see yet but watch out on the return (kidding again, family). We are watching today for the arrival of s/v Wanderlust, the boat we met coming down the TN/Tom. The couple with three kids from Chicago. They are making the run from Mayaguana to here direct in 36 hours +/-. We spent 3 days plus two 18 hour passages to do it. Yesterday we went to the beach and had lunch with a couple from our yacht club back home. They have been here three years (See!). There is a resort on the beach and we had to walk around it and then across the beach in front to get to the "public" area. The resort looked reserved. Our area had loud Caribbean music, food stands and lots of people. Black beans, rice and fried chicken (better than KFC) plus the ever present 1 liter beer for 900 pesos ($3). This was after the Palm Sunday service at the local Catholic church, which was all in Spanish, and a stop at the marina for the "every Sunday" flee market. Locals and cruisers sell everything from Spanish language DVD's (locals) to used and spare boat parts (cruisers). It really is a great community, locals and cruisers, and it is understandable how you could get hung up here. Sue asked that I send a short update so we could add another picture. We can add only one to each blog. This is the infamous couple at the bar at the Luperon Yacht Club.
