Salvage in my Sarong

02 June 2014
Saturday was market day - the biggest event around Orhanye! By dinghy we motored across to the other side of the bay and filled up 2 big bags of fresh fruit and vegetables. I love having fresh food on board as I tend to try and preserve our long life food for when we are on passage or away from shops. Eggs are sold in a plastic bag which is an interesting exercise getting them back on board unbroken!

Sarah has recently published her book 'East or a West, Med's Best' her memoirs of sailing around the Med on board Cockatoo in the 80s. It's been wonderful for us both to chat about publishing and publicity as well as share a few wines, including bubbly yesterday. Many cruisers make a sojourn to Symi, the Greek island nearby to stock up on wine as it is so expensive in Turkey.

Tomorrow we are going along with Sarah in her car to Marmaris as Ollie has to have his rabies shots. I'm looking forward to seeing another town in a Turkey and a car trip is a novelty when on a boat all the time. It's also an opportunity for us to find a metal work place to make an attachment for a swimming ladder for Lati. The ladder will be wonderful for when the weather warms up and we can swim in those beautiful island bays from the boat. There is a little minimart here with a small wooden pontoon for dinghies. Each day we tie up to buy bread, frozen water bottles and any other groceries we need. There are a couple of waterfront restaurants with yacht pontoons in front of them. We prefer being on anchor so we have space and breeze around us.

Some stronger east-south east winds are predicted for tomorrow night and Wednesday so we will stay put until Thursday, when we will hopefully get to Dacta. Dacta is not protected from the east or south but by the time we get there it will be west - north west. The weather changes so much in the Med so it is relaxing to be anchored in such a protected harbour. It is very pretty surrounded by steep mountains and pine trees. So very different to the bare rocky islands in the Aegean.
