Sailing to Lord Howe Island
26 December 2016 | Mooloolaba, Qld, Australia

Preparations are underway to sail Valiam to Lord Howe Island in a couple of days. As we haven't sailed her since January 2015, and have been living aboard on a part time basis, we are getting rid of stuff accumulated, sorting out satellite communication systems, putting on the best mainsail ( not the one that has circumnavigated the world!), cleaning her bum, checking the autopilot and safety gear and the list goes on. Provisioning will be done the day before departure. So much easier doing things from our marina berth in Mooloolaba. Northerlies are predicted after the 29th December but we aim to leave then in a light easterly which will become northerly by day 2. If all goes well we hope to arrive in Lord Howe on 1st January. It is 425 nautical miles from Mooloolaba on a rhumbline. Lord Howe is part of Australia so we don't need passports. No mobile phone coverage but we will have our satellite phone for limited data and messaging. There is wifi on the island.
It will be lovely to be at sea again. We visited Lord Howe on our first long offshore passage in Valiam in 1999. Now the moorings need to be booked in advance and there are other fees such as an environmental levy etc. Such a beautiful place. These snaps were taken the last time we were there.
