Valiam on the rocks

20 March 2025 | Iluka
Bill and Linda Anderson
This devastating event that happened to Valiam in chronological order from my Facebook posts:
7th March
We are sad to say that Valiam broke off her mooring last night. The wind was blowing 33 gusting 48 knots at 2.30 am which was high tide. We suspect it happened then due to ex cyclone Alfred. At daylight we drove down in the horrendous rain and wind to the Iluka boat ramp close to where she was moored. It was hard to see in the rain and we couldn't see her.
"Shes not there!" Captain Bill said. Shocked we began to drive out... "There she is!" Up against a rock wall behind the mangrove swap.
Im feeling sick and Bill begins to think what he could do. With our neighbour and friend Tim he decided to take the kayak out rather than the dinghy. Tim had a rope on shore tied to the kayak while Bill paddled to Valiam. The first thing he noticed was that the chain had broken right through. Down below he could see a small amount of water in the bilge. ( she's usually dry) The bow is resting up on the rocks with her 2.1m keel on the bottom.
Calls for help to SES and Marine Rescue didn't amount to anything. However a local Marine Services Company are going to come out to see how they can get her off the rocks.
At present Bill said he was going to try to upright her off the rocks with a strong rope to shore. Not sure yet if this plan worked. Thank you again everyone especially Shelley and all the women in Women Who Sail Australia group and all the locals who have been supportive. It's a devastating time for us but we are hopeful Valiam will be ok.

UPDATE :
Please note Valiam has now been rescued by Bill by himself at 2.30am yesterday morning using long lines secured ashore. I was land crew along with friends Tim and Claire. More detailed post here somewhere with photos. Thank you everyone for your well wishes and words of support. In this situation there was no one to help us. She needed to come off at that high tide.

5th March
Just arrived back in Iluka after an exhausting drive in 1.5 days from Victoria. We went immediately to the boat ramp where Valiam is moored. Let's hope she continues to hold on to the mooring over the next 2 days with stronger winds with Cyclone Alfred doing its thing.
