Memories of Croatia

03 May 2020
Bill and Linda Anderson
Bill acquired this captains hat today which reminded me of our time in Croatia where Bill was indeed a captain on a vessel in Croatia. It was his brother's Bavaria we delivered from Krk, Croatia to Messalonghi in Greece via Italy. Peter and Ann joined us as crew. I remember the pale blues and sometimes stark islands we anchored next to.

Croatia to Greece: goodbyes and preparation
05 August 2013 | Punat Marina, Krk, Croatia

It is just as hot here as in Greece and impossible to do anything between 11-6 without copious amounts of sweat, drinking water constantly and feeling frazzled. It's now 6.30pm and Bill and Peter have taken the dinghy outboard to a shady tree to pull it apart to try and make it go. Peter has just got back and has reported that the carburetor is full of salt due to being exposed and not used for a while. He is grabbing cleaning tools to hopefully rectify this problem. The fuel line and tank has water in it. A good challenge for these two who have known each other since they were in Boy Scouts. Hopefully we can hear the happy sound of vroom sooner rather than later. I don't want to leave Punat until we have an operational dinghy. Earlier before the problems were diagnosed, we thought new fuel would be good. Peter raced off with a petrol can and managed to hitch a ride into Krk in an air conditioned Audi belonging to a yacht owner and his family and dog. They kindly drove him back as well. It's great having enthusiastic crew!

This morning after John and Bill visited the harbour masters office to get the official paper work done, the rest of the family came to say goodbye. It's been a wonderful 5 days catching up and hanging out together.

John will meet us in Greece to take his boat to Bulgaria in September. Hopefully we will be on our way to an anchorage where we can swim to cool off in the next day or so.

10 August , PAG, Croatia
Our first experience of a Bora wind (strong NE) began with this big cloud. This morning at 5am it started. Average winds 20 knots for the morning with highest gusts recorded at 36 knots. The anchor held well and no other yachts here so we could let out plenty of chain. A day on board Johns yacht researching anchorages in Croatia and waiting it out.

SAILING IN MY SARONG, Around the World - a 30 year dream
Linda and Bill Anderson are living proof that it's never too late to fulfil your dream. After 30 years of fantasising about sailing around the world, they finally set sail on an action packed voyage that would take two years to complete.

Never mind that Linda suffered from sea sickness, was petrified of storms and had little sailing experience, or that the couple were to make the trip in their home built yacht, this 30,000-nautical-mile voyage was about achieving their dream.

While they gained so much from their adventure, Bill and Linda also gave a lot back to the places they visited - working with street children, running art and play workshops with Linda's vibrant photos and artwork filling the pages of this book.

It's a story of battling gales and sailing through the world's pirate hot spots; of exploring exotic and remote communities and integrating with the locals; and of experiencing the vastness of the great oceans and making new friends at each destination. But above all, the story is one of overcoming a challenge of massive proportions and leaving a small part of themselves in every single one of the 30 countries Linda and Bill visited in their swift, yet tough yacht Valiam. This is their story.
The Mediterranean Dream in a rescued boat
Join the latest adventures of Linda and Captain Underpants.......

Salvage in my Sarong is a remarkable story of how Linda's husband Bill surprises her (and himself), by winning an online bid for an old wooden boat, half way across the world, in the Caribbean. At first Linda is horrified and reluctant to become involved in her husband's crazy scheme. This sailing boat 'Lati', had been abandoned, ransacked and almost stolen by pirates and is a total mess when the couple arrive from Australia.

Linda's dream of sailing the Mediterranean becomes reality as somehow, this gallant 9.4 metre yacht emerges like Cinderella, taking them across the vast Atlantic to Portugal and the Med. For three summers, Lati takes them on a romantic cruise to Italy, Greece and Turkey fitting easily into quaint harbours with tavernas ashore. However, the voyage is not without drama, as they continue with boat repairs in exotic locations, making many friends along the way.

From the author of Sailing in my Sarong comes this story of resourcefulness, endurance and celebration in the forging of a strong bond between a couple and their boat, a must-read adventure that makes anything seem possible.

Linda Frylink Anderson is an artist, retired Early Childhood teacher and University tutor. She has been married to Bill aka Captain Underpants since 1977. Together they have two grown up children, three grandchildren and a thirst for adventure. Linda's first book 'Sailing in my Sarong, Around the World - a 30 year dream' is a memoir of their circumnavigation of the world in their home built yacht 'Valiam'.

Linda still likes to wear sarongs, and these days she escapes the world to her bush studio in northern New South Wales or she may be on board Valiam in Mooloolaba, Queensland if not at sea.

Isolating is like an ocean passage

12 April 2020
Bill and Linda Anderson
It’s been a while since I’ve written here. As we enjoy Easter all on our own, not having seen the family ( except by video messenger) for several weeks I’m reminded of the times we were cruising. For weeks away from land and away from family. At least now we can go to town to buy groceries and other essentials. On passage we make do with what we have on board and make things last.

Our longest ocean passage time-wise was 25 days from the US Virgin Islands to tge Azores in the North Atlantic. ( in Lati 31ft) Our longest passage in nautical miles was Galapagos to Marquesas at 3054nm which we completed in an amazing 17 days in Valiam ( 45ft and sails fast).

So now we sit in front of a beautiful open fire under the stars in northern NSW. The current situation of social distancing, closed cafes bars and shops, border control and loss of jobs seems like a different world. We are lucky. We are well and have a house and a boat as well as good food to eat. A very good time to reflect

Latest boat built by Captain Underpants

Clarety the Argie15 plywood sailing dinghy Captain Underpants built to teach the grandkids to sail . She was launched on the Clarence river in Iluka, NSW. First trip with Joe, Tahlia and Annika. Second trip with Uncle Anthony and Geordi.
All went well..... then trip number 3 with the Captain and Linda was aborted after the first ever capsize in 43 years sailing together! Linda untangled herself from the rigging, rescued the oars while the captain stood on the centre board. With the help of Anthony Clarety was upright again but full of water which was bailed out once ashore. Funnily enough the kids were too busy playing to notice the capsize!
