The Great Yellow Bumblebee

17 Aug, headed south to Lochboisdale and then cycled to Eriskay, the island where ‘Whisky Galore’ was filmed. The west coast of South Uist is famous for the machair, a flower rich grassland, created by crafters who added seaweed to the sand to make it more fertile for their sheep to graze. It is one of the last places where the great Yellow Bumblebee can be found. 50 years ago this bee was found throughout the uk, but now only found on the Outer Hebrides and the north coast of Scotland. It’s very aptly named as its bigger than your average bee and the abdomen is pale yellow. Not a great picture, but evidence that we’ve seen one!
