Oyster hotels

22 October. Noticed these in the marina, hanging down from the pontoons into the water. They are cages with about 10 floors in each where ‘brood oysters’ have been put. The idea being that they breed in the safety of the cage and then release thousands of oyster larvae into the water to re-establish the oyster populations that have virtually disappeared due to over harvesting and habitat changes. They do a great job at filtering seawater and removing pollutants, especially nitrogen in the process.
