We arrived in Ardfern yesterday with Vela on the hard, ready and waiting to have her bottom scrubbed, sanded and painted. There’s a lovely atmosphere in the marina with owners excited to be allowed back to their boats - a bit like the first day of term after the summer holidays with people keen to chat about their lockdown winter and plans for this year.
During a winter storm, the boat moored next to Vela broke one of its lines and hit Vela on the side damaging the toe rail and hull. The yard have completed the repair on toe rail and they’ve done an amazing job, when it’s weathered in I don't think we’ll be able to see the repair. (But then it did cost £10k +vat so it should look good! -insurance thankfully). They’ve also injected some epoxy into the damaged part of the hull and then we’ll get a proper repair done next winter when we are back in Lymington. Otherwise Vela has come through the winter fine, no mold or damp anywhere though a family of mussels appreciated the inactivity and moved in on the bow thruster, they have since been liberated and returned to Loch Craignish.
All scrubbing and sanding completed today, as well as replacing the anodes. So painting tomorrow and hopefully back in the water on Friday. I shall now handover to the technical department for an explanation on anodes and antifoul paint....for the non-sailors!
