Sharing our Journey

Fair Isle

4-6 June. A glorious 10hour sail north from Kirkwall, took us to Fair Isle, home of the knitted stripey jumpers. A tiny island about 8 miles in length situated half way between Orkney and Shetland. There is a tiny harbour wall, with room for 3 boats along the wall, we arrived and the wall was already full with 3 yachts and the island ferry. But all the sailors came to our help and all moved, so we could fit on the wall and then had one yacht alongside us. Everyone very friendly and helpful.
The island is famous for the variety of birds which visit the site. Both nesting seabirds and land based which used the island as a migratory stop. Over 300 species recorded. Just on the cliff next to the harbour wall there were nesting fulmars, black guillemot and terns, with magical puffins on the cliff top. We spent a wonderful couple of evenings sitting above their burrows and watching them arrive. They seem to come ashore about sunset, have a bit of interaction and then either go back to sea for the night or settle near their burrow. Currently one of the pair will be in the burrow incubating an egg. See some footage below
