Old Shetland 16 June

A gorgeous day for a trip to the Island of Moussa, famous for its broch, one of the best preserved Iron Age buildings in Europe. A round building with a double wall, about 10m high. Incredible that it is still standing, especially considering the wind it must have encountered over the last 2000 years. Storm petrels (a small seabird about the size of swallow) nest in the walls of the broch. Only returning to the nest at night, as they are vulnerable to being caught by great black-backed gulls and the big bullies of the coast - the giant skuas. Their legs are so far back on their bodies to aid them when at sea, where they spend most of the year, they can’t actually standup on land, so they would be easy prey if they came ashore in daylight.
Pic - the broch with the small door, open at top but they think it probably would have had a wooden roof on it.
