Return to Fair Isle 18 June

We loved Fair Isle so much we thought it would be good to take Fizz and Gerry there. After checking they could get back to Shetland to get their ferry home, we set off south in sunshine and a pleasant westerly wind. There was a very informal race with Donald and Gregg, we did give them a few hours head-start. 1st place to Donald, 2nd to us and Gregg after looking like he was heading to Norway for a while, came in 3rd. We got there in time to walk to the northern lighthouse and to watch the puffins on the cliffs. This time some were returning with sand eels in their mouths - a sign that some of the single eggs they have been incubating have now hatched. Most birds sit on their eggs, puffins are slightly different - before they leg an egg they lose feathers in their armpits, and so sit with the egg under their wing, with warmth coming directly from their skin.
