Having sailed past Cape Wrath Lighthouse (NW tip of Scottish mainland) we thought it would be good to see it close up. This involved cycling north to Durness, getting a ferry across the estuary and then cycling along a track to the Lighthouse. Amazingly there is a cafe there - the Ozone Cafe which is open 24/7. Sadly we couldn't get in or close to the lighthouse as a major refurbishment is being carried out which includes converting it from diesel (which they used to bring in by helicopter) to solar panels.
The whole area is very wild and is used as a military training ground, so dotted in the wilderness are 3 tin shed composting toilets. we presume whilst its ok for soldiers to shoot each other its not safe for them to go to the toilets in the outdoors.
After getting back to Kinlochbervie we headed south to Loch Laxford, a very pretty loch with lots of inlets and islands. But very full of mussel farms which didn't leave much room for us to anchor! We continued south into Loch Badcall, but again full of mussel, fish farms and lobster pots. After a close call with a long floating line on a lobster pot - requiring a very quick reverse gear on the engine to make sure the line didn't get wrapped on our propeller we anchor for a lunch stop.
Continuing south along the stunning coastline of Stoer Head, with the Old Man of Stoer, we came to Lochinver. The crew of Maudling took our lines and immediately offered us freshly caught scallops. Which jay prepared and cooked in garlic and butter.
