Njord's Adventures

Hvar and Otok Sveti Klement

09 June 2018 | ACI Marina Luka Palmizana
Clare
We are in need of wifi and have to go to a T Mobile shop to get get another chip. I could open my own shop with all the dongles and chips I am collecting along the way.

Hvar is a nice tourist town and we wanted to go here anyway. The forecast was not great and we should have some rain and full cloud cover but it is not very far. We decided we could poke our nose out of the secure and well sheltered bay at Scedro and if we didn't like what we saw go back in again. The swell was pretty high and we were only making 3.2 knots under engine up and down, up and down but we decided to carry on.

We arrived at Hvar and there was lots of space on the harbour wall, but with good reason. I dropped the anchor and back to the wall we went. We just about got in and the Harbour Master came to chase us away. They are expecting more back weather from the SW and the wall is only tenable for motor yachts of the mega variety.

He suggested we go to the ACI Marina at Luka Palmizana which was our other option anyway. But probably we would have anchored in a bay. This marina is on Otok Sveti Klement. There is plenty of room here and we came in stern to and lazy lines. The ACI marinas are not cheap but this one has good pontoons, nice space, a small shop, bar and a restaurant. You can walk out over the hill to the other side of the island where there are a couple more restaurants too, but otherwise there is not much here. The showers and laundry facilities are good too. A water taxi will take you into Hvar, but being a Sunday and wet we did not take it across.

What is it with this rain; no sooner had we moored when the heavens opened and we had 3 hours of solid rain and thunder. I feel sorry for people coming for a one week holiday.

Hvar would have been a bad option we saw huge peaky swell making for the harbour rolling in so it would have been uncomfortable and potentially a harzard on the harbour wall. They have buoys too but in the swell that was not appealing either.

Passage: Otok Scedro to Otok Klement via Hvar - 19nm
ACI Palmizana Marina: Kn743 / €100 / night

Since trying for Hvar town quay or a buoy we now have heard from 3 people that it is not a good place to come in with your own yacht as you will get damaged with the constant swell. So we won't go back by Njord.

Vessel Name: Njord of London
Vessel Make/Model: Malo 39 Classic
Crew: Vic Farhi & Clare Harrison
About: Learnt to sail together and the first sailing experience was in Lanzarote in 2005. We then bought Mandarin, a Bavaria 39 and in June 2012 bought Njord, a Malo 39 from the Baltic.
Extra: As attributed to Mark Twain: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bow lines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Two weeks of blissful sailing gently around the Ionian in 2019. High season for chartered and family holidays yet we still managed to find some less frequented bays to drop the hook
