Diocletian's Palace, Split

Our aim was to get to Split to pick up a friend and to visit Diocletian's Palace.
Emperor Diocletian was born in Dalmatia. His parents were slaves. He distinguished himself in the Roman army and became Emperor in 284 AD. The concept of retirement was not normal in those days for great leaders however he decided to return to Split and retire in a most lavish Palace that he had built in 295 AD. At one point he was asked by Rome if he would like to return and he said if you could see the cabbages I grow you will know why I say no! A very wise move.
To get to the Palace you literally walk in from the sidewalk of cafes and restaurants and through the Bronze Gate to an area used today in modern commerce which is filled with arts and crafts stalls.
You can only visit the basement area which was built to support the apartments above. However you can certainly get a feel for the size and grandeur.
