Bari to Brindisi via Monopoli

Bari to Brindisi via Monopoli

Time to leave Bari and make our way down the east coast of Italy in a southerly direction to finally end up in Marina di Ragusa for the winter.

Vic and I had really enjoyed Monopoli on the way towards Bari in May this year but we knew that there are only 3 or 4 berths alongside the harbour wall and to get a berth in the local yacht club marina even the local Italians have to book in advance. So we planned to go via Monopoli and if we were unsuccessful we would carry on to Brindisi. We also had the weather to think about as we were likely to be in the next harbour for at least two days as the winds and the CAPE index were mounting up their respective scales.

We arrived in Monopoli and circled around the harbour wall a couple of times but sadly the couple of yachts, catamaran and small motor boat that were already there were not neatly moored and took up the space where one more (i.e. us) yacht could have tied up. So, on we went to Brindisi. In hindsight this was a good thing as the wind was getting up and we were in for a rough day.

The journey from Bari to Brindisi was around 50 nm and as we came into Brindisi, which has the longest harbour wall you have ever seen, the seas were very confused and stood up at the entrance.
I called the Harbour Master for permission to enter. We had thought the old harbour at the end of the Appian Way would be our stop for the night, but as we were in for stormy, windy weather we decided to go to the Marina just out of the town and take the bus in to do our sightseeing. The Marina is nicely protected and as Vic and I have been here before we know the routine.

The daily rate was more for August than in May as we are in the "Italian" holiday season.

About: Learnt to sail together and the first sailing experience was in Lanzarote in 2005. We then bought Mandarin, a Bavaria 39 and in June 2012 bought Njord, a Malo 39 from the Baltic.
Extra: As attributed to Mark Twain: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bow lines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Two weeks of blissful sailing gently around the Ionian in 2019. High season for chartered and family holidays yet we still managed to find some less frequented bays to drop the hook
