Njord's Adventures

Ormos Antisamos, Cephalonia

Ormos Antisamos is a very large bay with a pretty beach right at the far end. The surrounding hills are densley wooded and the water a very pleasing hue of turquoise and peacock blues. We found a nice spot to anchor in 7 metres of water quite close to the beach but with plenty of swinging room with our 30 metres of chain out. The seabed is mostly mud and there is a thin layering of seaweed too, which was not difficult to get through to set the anchor.

The beach has a nice bar, water sports and sun chairs and parasols. There was some music in the afternoon but by the evening the sunbathers had gone back to Sami around the promontory.

The first evening was fairly quiet, the winds were quite gusty at 20-25 knots and there were only 4 other boats in the bay. We did swing around the compass over night but had no trouble with the anchor. The next day was a different story everyone wanted to anchor on top of Njord. Two yachts I shooed away; a French boat who realised they were too near by themselves and a Bulgarian charter boat who wanted to know what my problem was! But madam if you swing so will we, yes but they would swing onto the pebble beach and get stuck and if we then swung, we would probably collide. Anyway they chose another unsuitable spot and then decided to leave, phew!

We got Dennis, our dinghy out and rode round the bay which was good practice. We don't often get Dennis out to play!

We would definitely come back here again.

Vessel Name: Njord of London
Vessel Make/Model: Malo 39 Classic
Crew: Vic Farhi & Clare Harrison
About: Learnt to sail together and the first sailing experience was in Lanzarote in 2005. We then bought Mandarin, a Bavaria 39 and in June 2012 bought Njord, a Malo 39 from the Baltic.
Extra: As attributed to Mark Twain: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bow lines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Two weeks of blissful sailing gently around the Ionian in 2019. High season for chartered and family holidays yet we still managed to find some less frequented bays to drop the hook
