Ag Nikolaos, Zakinthos on Costas' Buoy

07 June 2019 | Ag Nikolaos, Zakinthos
Clare
From Cephalonia we crossed to Zakinthos and decided to try David & Marcia's suggestion of contacting Costas and asking him for a buoy outside his taverna. He does not charge and it is then nice to go to his Taverna for dinner, which is exactly what we did.

Costas answered our email immediately and said of course we can have a buoy, just call when we were inside the island and at Ag. Nicholaos harbour. As we arrived it was blowing 20 knots and we were asked to circle in the harbour whilst he looked after another boat and then we would come and show us where to moor.

He has a good strong mooring about 2.5 boat lengths from his Taverna and he and one of his brothers handed us the mooring line for the bow and then took it back to the stern where there is a mooring buoy. Soon we were settled in and enjoyed the activity of tripper boats coming and going and ferries coming in. Most yachts moor up against the harbour wall under the Port Police building alongside. However a big swell does come in here and two of our friends had to leave in the middle of the night earlier in the season as it became dangerous and they did some damage to their boats. We, thankfully had a quiet night with no rolling at all.

Vessel Name: Njord of London
Vessel Make/Model: Malo 39 Classic
Crew: Vic Farhi & Clare Harrison
About: Learnt to sail together and the first sailing experience was in Lanzarote in 2005. We then bought Mandarin, a Bavaria 39 and in June 2012 bought Njord, a Malo 39 from the Baltic.
Extra: As attributed to Mark Twain: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bow lines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Two weeks of blissful sailing gently around the Ionian in 2019. High season for chartered and family holidays yet we still managed to find some less frequented bays to drop the hook
