Njord's Adventures

Koroni, Pelopponese

Koroni is a castle town with another nice bay to anchor in. It is big and there is plenty of room to potter around to find the best spot.

However we managed, mid-morning to get the anchor chain wrapped around a huge rock, we had circled round with a change in the wind direction. We noticed this as we began snatching and jerking as if on a tight leash in dead flat calm water, which we were. The water was very clear and we could see the big rock and the chain around it. So we got ready to raise the anchor and re-anchor. Vic gave me instructions as to how he wanted me to drive round the rock whilst he catefully raised the anchor. Once sorted and the anchor up we drove around a bit looking at the sea bed and found a nice stretch of sand with weed around it. You could see the bottom easily and it turned out to be a good circle this time. We were not far from our original spot but all was well for the rest of the day and the next night. The pilot book, NoForeignLand, CAMate and Navily do not show rocks as the seabed make up so I have added it as a reference to the latter 3 for future reference.

Overnight there had only been two of us in the bay but a few more yachts came in for a lunchtime stop and on our second night 6 of us were anchored. It was still very peaceful, but it is open and you coukd get pushed to the harbourwall if the winds were on-shore and strong.

The castle is an example of the Venetian fortress architecture and encompasses houses and churches. The castle dominates the Akritas cape, on the southern edge of the Messinian Gulf. It was built by the Venetians in the 13th century and revamped by the Ottomans in the 16th.

There is also another anchorage to the south of the cape if that suits the wind direction better.

Vessel Name: Njord of London
Vessel Make/Model: Malo 39 Classic
Crew: Vic Farhi & Clare Harrison
About: Learnt to sail together and the first sailing experience was in Lanzarote in 2005. We then bought Mandarin, a Bavaria 39 and in June 2012 bought Njord, a Malo 39 from the Baltic.
Extra: As attributed to Mark Twain: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bow lines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Two weeks of blissful sailing gently around the Ionian in 2019. High season for chartered and family holidays yet we still managed to find some less frequented bays to drop the hook
