Njord's Adventures

Kalo Limeni, Cephalonia

We left Andisami bay and made our way slowly up the channel between Cephalonia and Ithica. We are now going north and as the winds are predominantly from the NW or N we are heading against them. They are very light in the morning so our strategy has been to arrive in the next anchorage at lunchtime, albeit motoring but then not fighting against the winds. This channel tends to exaggerate the wind speed as it causes it to funnel down.

Kalo Limeni did not disappoint, it is very pretty. We arrived at about 12.15 at the same time as a tripper boat as it happens, both of us trying to put down our anchor at the same time. There were five other boats with anchors down facing to the middle and their stern lines taken ashore. We anchored more in the middle of the bay free swinging. It worked well for everyone. The tripper boat only stopped for 30 minutes and then moved on. We stayed here two nights and it is interesting to note that the anchorage was not on the tripper boat agenda for the next day.

The winds actually ended up being Easterlies and not NW'lys and we did re-anchor for the first night as we were too close to the rocks for comfort initially. The holding was very good. We anchored in 10.9m water.

There is supposed to be a little Taverna here, but there were no signs of it being open on either night. As the evening drew in, the goats, this time a huge herd, all with bells around their necks came down to the water's edge to amuse us. It was a most calm and peaceful evening and night.

Having a chilled local white wine before supper.

Vessel Name: Njord of London
Vessel Make/Model: Malo 39 Classic
Crew: Vic Farhi & Clare Harrison
About: Learnt to sail together and the first sailing experience was in Lanzarote in 2005. We then bought Mandarin, a Bavaria 39 and in June 2012 bought Njord, a Malo 39 from the Baltic.
Extra: As attributed to Mark Twain: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bow lines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Two weeks of blissful sailing gently around the Ionian in 2019. High season for chartered and family holidays yet we still managed to find some less frequented bays to drop the hook
