The route into Grand Harbour Valletta, Malta
12 August 2021 | Grand Harbour Valletta, Malta
Grand Harbour in Valletta is very special, full of history and a wonderful
deep-water harbour. We were going to the far end of the harbour to MMH's yard to come out of the water for Njord's usual antifouling, hull polish, anodes change, lift raft service and new flares. She is well over due for her beauty treatments due to missing out last year.
We had an interesting time getting permission coming into Valletta. We called, as instructed at the 12nm marker (on the chart not actual) but got no reply, I called again at 10nm, we were then instructed to go to the 5nm marker, then 1nm, then 0.5 nm and then the breakwater, calling in each time. Maybe the Port Controller liked my VHF voice and technique - all that practice hosting the MdR VHS net every Wednesday in the winter?
Eventually we were on our way and came into the historic Grand Harbour and to the MMH yard.
Our friend Barbara from MdR was in the yard and helped us with our lines. This is the first time we have been out for 2 years and it was like being a novice again. I failed to throw the mooring lines (and a short distance) twice, oops! Barbara then kindly invited us over to her and Hew's catamaran for a well chilled Prosecco before bed time, very necessary (stress what stress, sailors don’t get stressed!).
