Swilly-Dublin Leg 1 completed

Ably assisted by Tom Taggert on this leg.

Less than 2 weeks to go

Its only round the corner when we leave Lough Swilly on 17th May to head for the start line in Falmouth on 1st June. Already the long range forecasts are being studied - although a depression position change by only a hundred miles can make a significant difference to the sailing.

A largely uneventfull motor-sail for almost the entire distance from Fahan to Howth marinas. Setoff 2100 Friday night into calm conditions with gorgeous sunset and a near full moon. Motored against the tide past Malin Head and Inishtrahull and picked up the tide through Rathlin Sound and round Fair Head.
Just squeaked past Torr Head and its 10kts of tide before it turned against us again.

Weather was light to moderate and cold N-NE swinging NW. Full winter layers were needed!

Duked in and out of Antrim Coast bays trying to catch a favourable eddy while having long discussions about whether the deep blue flowers on the grassy cliffs were bluebells. (Later identified as a type of geranium). Not often botany is discussed on a sailing voyage.

A brief notion of stopping at Bangor was dispelled in favour of continuing to Ardglass. Tied up at 11:30pm, beer, bed, alarm at 0600am.

Again motorsailed direct to the waypoint at Lambay Is. F2-3 NW-W, fair. Loitered round Rockabill Lighthouse for photoshots to match the ICC Logbook of the year trophy for the Rockall trip last year then motored through cold rain past Lambay (with its indiginous population of wallapies) round Irelands Eye to Howth and tied up at 1700.

We plan to stop in Dublin, Howth for a few days to get lifted out and her bottom scrubbed and some rigging adjustments before heading South - with a possible stop in the Scillies - and to the marina in Falmouth. To ease the burden we will have very welcome crewing assistance on these legs.

The race organisers have planned a week of events leading up to the start - which we plan to join and try (and most likely fail) to exercise a level of self control. During this time we will of course have to preform critical last minute tasks including the non-trivial victualling and stowing.

We will be joined in Falmouth by Sally and Sandra who no doubt will assist in the sendoff celebrations.
