Turn For The Azores
30 May 2011 | Northern Atlantic
Dawn
Here we are sailing along in a South Easterly direction towards the Azores which are 1200nm away & will probably take us about 12 to 14 days. THis is day nine. Last night we sailed up to latitude 42 degrees north 300 nm away from Nova Scotia It was freezing & we went that direction to try & catch the Southerly winds off the Canadian Coast. The weather around 42 degrees north is where icebergs melt & the visibility off the coast of Canada is at it's worst at this time of the year we experienced quite a bit of fog. WE had some fun climbing through the forward port cabin hatch to refuel the main tank from the jerry cans without spilling over the deck. Big surprise & near disaster was to have received an e-mail from sailmail telling us we are being excessive in our use of sailmail which of course was David with the weather router Bob constantly trying to work out our easiest course to the Azores, & on top of all that our Satelite phone is running out of time. But sailmail has been very nice & re-instated us. We also had some high drama last night with Dawn seeing this dark shadow moving & thinking a rat or a giant moth had arrived on board at some stage. A blood curdling yell was heard by David & he came to my rescue & my shadow turned out to be a bird which had flown into the cabin & was identified by David as a sea swallow.
