Winter needs to leave!

11 February 2014 | Iowa and cold
Gene
As my family will tell you, I get bored easily. Not a good thing in winter when I can not leave the house for fear of frostbite. That being said I had to find something to keep myself and my dreams of sailing alive. This took the form of a new, slightly used sail. A 140% Genoa (a large head sail that can caught more wind and increase the speed of the s/v) that had spend some serious time in a salt water environment. How do I know it was a saltwater experienced sail, you ask. Well, the grommets and hank-ons (the clamps that attach the sail to the head stay) were so corroded that most would not open, and when removed the grommet fell apart. So I tried a little experiment and placed the removed hank-ons in vinegar to see if they could be saved, and to my surprise most came out working. The problem is they were sown on, and I was unable to find out how to resow them. After multiple google searches, and even some library visits, I BIT THE BULLET! I just went and ordered new ones; the press on style. After placing new grommets (also a new experience) I changed them out. I have a new gentle used sail....with large brown and pink stains! I will just see if they will clean out, or the other sailors on lake Rathbun will just have to point and laugh with comments like, "There goes those dirty people with that dirty sail!". And to that I say, "A Genoa is for sailing when you want speed, and when you want to get down and dirty". Hope our friends and family will be joining us this year on the lake. See you soon!
