Leaving Anacortes for a cruise to the lovely town of Port Townsend. The current is with us in Guemes Channel which is evident by our cruising speed over ground of over 11 knots. Our typical cruising speed is 7 knots. We cross the 12 mile wide Strait of Juan de Fuca with favorable currents and give a wide berth to Point Wilson where the tide rips can be dangerous in the wrong combination of wind and current. But the Captain has planned accordingly and the trip goes fairly smoothly with just a few current caused swirlies. The town of Port Townsend has a little bit of everything. It's distinctive charm and spectacular views of Admiralty Inlet and the Olympic Mountains make the trip worth it. We choose to ride our new bikes on a portion of the Olympic Discovery Trail. The 16 mile round trip wanders through beautiful forests with fragrant wildflowers and occasional water views. Good friends Charley and Sara introduced us to the popular trail and joined us for the fun ride. Check out the South Sound Album in the Gallery for a few pictures of our stay in Port Townsend.
