Rescue Time

Well, home for some of the crew. I needed to try to find SOME night life. While boarding the dinghy to go back to the boat, some 'kids' came to me and asked, in French, if I could take them back to their boat. I told them, okay, but I need to take Phil and Debra first. Then I would come back to them [...]

Buying the Restaurant

From our boat we could see a ship onshore(See picture). It's not really a ship it is actually a doctor's office. Off to shore for another dinner in Les Saintes. Last time Phil and I were here we learned a lesson in reservations. The only place a week ago that would have us for dinner was the art gallery. [...]

Back to The Saints

Even though Bas-Du_Fort was a nice place, we thought Debra would like Les Saintes. It was only three hours away. And it would be a idealistic anchorage to start the trip. When Phil and I did the trip North, it was blowing 24kts and the boat was doing 9.8kts. Now with Debra aboard, the winds were about [...]

Zoo Rock Cafe -- Deux

Debra felt that our refer was lacking some real 'food'. So off to the market. Phil and I 'thought' that the boat was provisioned with a chicken, two steaks and beer. Debra thought we need some Oranges, grapes, cheeses, carrots, Perrier, and of course, Diet Coke! Debra wanted some 'beef' for dinner. Ah, [...]

Debra Arrives

Phil and I went out for lunch. Just something simple. We walked by the restaurant called 'Le Pirate Caribeen'. As we looked at the menu outside, this girl comes out and says "Free Drinks". That sounds cool. She hands us a card. Then we get the requirement. We must order an appetizer. Okay, no problem [...]

Meat!

There are quite a lot of restaurants at the marina. One is called the Zoo Rock Café. Not that the name got us there, but the menu. In French they had 'Brochette'. In English it's 'Sword'. Well, is really was a sword! If you order a 'sword' of beef. The sword of beef would come on a stand with a giant [...]

Need Nails

28 January 2010
With Phil's new shoes we continued on our quest for lunch. We saw a little place on the beach. This guy comes up to us and asks if we want some local food. Sounded good to us. He told us that this place had the best local food in town. And there are even some white people there. Nothing says local food like where the tourist eat. It fit our requirements of quick lunch, on the beach and had beer. This place had no menu. It just what 'Mom' is cooking. Today is was chicken. I had the feeling that yesterday was chicken and tomorrow will be chicken. Our NBF (New Best Friend) helped us order. It must of been obvious to him that we couldn't order the only thing on the menu. He started telling us about island life. I asked about the Prime Minister that I had heard was doing very well for Dominica. He told us that it give him goose bumps thinking about the Prime Minister. He loves him. The PM is helping the poor, not just the rich. He told us about sailing around the world and coming back to Dominica and starting a farm. His first crop he gave to the poor people. As he told us his stories Phil and I ate our chicken lunch. It was very good. It had a piece of BBQ chicken, a salad, lentil beans, fried plantains, some rice and some island vegetable. We finished up and needed to get to Customs before they closed again. Our NBF said he will take us, but first he wanted to show us one thing. We walked down the street with him and around a corner. He showed us a run down shack and said that was the house he was born in. The included picture isn't very good, but it wasn't much of a house. Phil and headed back to the street and toward Customs. Our NBF started the talk about how giving is such a wonderful thing. And if we could give him EC$30 so he could buy some nails to 'fix' his house. We already knew that this was the way it was going to end up. He dropped his price to EC$20 for nails. Phil gave him the twenty and he went away. It was interesting hearing his story, but were not sure how much was true. I hope he fixes the roof of his house before the next rain.
