Day One
29 July 2016 | Yarmouth
Susan/Windy
You may be aware that yesterday at around three o'clock, the clouds came over, the drizzle got going and the temperature dropped. Great! We were leaving the house, setting off on our three week sailing holiday. By the time we arrived at the boat the wind had also joined in. Never mind stay positive - it's bound to pass. It didn't. We set off from Hamble to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight at around 5.30pm, a short fifteen mile sail. This first sail of the holiday wasn't pleasant. 30 knots of wind over the boat coming from the SW, the direction in which we were trying to sail, made for a pretty slow, bumpy ride. Eventually we decided to motor sail, as tacking back no forth was just taking too long. By 8.45pm in deteriorating visibility Yarmouth Harbour came into sight and, although we had only come fifteen miles, we were very happy to get inside the harbour and out of the wind. The wind is forecast to blow quite strongly from the SW (anything with a 6 in we’re not too keen!) for the next 24 hours. So we’ll spend a couple of nights in Yarmouth, listening to weather forecasts, waiting for the wind to drop and, in fact, as I write this the forecast for the next week seems to be much improved! Fingers crossed! I have a feeling we may blog a lot about the weather as, thinking about it, checking it, listening to it, being in ‘IT’, does seem to occupy a large amount of time!
