Strong NE Winds force 5-7

23 November 2018 | 201NM West of Sao Antao
Days Run 23.7NM.

At 1205hrs yesterday engine off and sailing under full main and Genoa on a beam reach in force 3 - 4 winds from the north. Pleasant long period swells from the North.

At 2000hrs we set the bluewater runner and furl the main and genoa, and make good sailing slightly south of our course to keep the sail full.

Then at 0100hrs a blast of wind over 25knots pulls the spinnaker halyard block off the top of the mast, and the halyard runs out of the jam cleat and slips off the winch, which lowers the sail almost to the water. We try and pull it up and furl it with limited success, but we do recover it with a little damage.

Then we set the jib and a well reefed main, and making 8 to 9 knots!

Also the ensign flag pole broke off the mounting, but we did recover it.

Very rough seas about 3 to 4 meters high and some breaking, so lots of motion on board!

Forecast for continuing breezy weather from the North East for the next few days at least, so very good progress expected.
