Leg 2 - Day 6
26 April 2012 | Hilton Head, SC
Pam
After a scary night coming into the Doboy Sound last night in the dark to get to our final anchorage for the night (yes, it was a nail-biter for me), we had a pleasant day today. We headed up the ICW at 7:30 this morning and went offshore at St. Catherines Sound around noon.
We saw our first alligator as it crossed in front of our path on the ICW (it was a small one). One of our big battles today was the freaking horseflies that flooded the cockpit and hulls. They bite!!! As soon as we got out offshore from St. Catherines Sound, they stopped. But then we got the small flies.....and they bite, too!!
Had a nice sail today but he waves got choppy late afternoon, so we headed in to Hilton Head, SC. We're staying at Harbour Town Yacht Basin.....a really superb marina right next to the candy-striped lighthouse. We settled in with a nice drink on the boat and then went on shore to visit some of the shops (T-shirts!!) and then went to have dinner at The Crazy Crab restaurant.
Everyone is asleep now except for me, so I think I'll visit the little bar in the square and listen to the excellent acoustic guitar music over there for a little bit.
We are not going to make it to Murrell's Inlet by the time the trip is over (Sorry Auntie Nancy and Uncle Joe....we'll miss seeing you two). But we plan on being a little bit further north from Charleston.
We sailed about 80 statute miles today. It was a long but productive day!
