Leg 4 - Day 7

30 September 2012 | Manasquan Inlet to New Haven CT
Roger
New York and Home

Today is Saturday September 22nd.
Leaving the Manasquan River Basin at 6am . We were on open ocean at 615 heading to New York City and Hells Gate. Today will be a timed day. We need to be at Hells Gate in the East River around slack tide as the current will be too strong for the engines if we have the tide against us. Its 730 am and we just passed Asbury Park NJ. Remember the Bealtles? Around 900am we see the sky line of New York and we have very calm seas, we are slowing down to hit Hells Gate at the correct time. Rick is cooking Bacon Again I guess he likes to be on a diet!!! Around 1045am on Channel 16 we hear a distress call from a boat sinking in the Rockaway Reef. We are two far away to help and two high speed Coast Guard Boats or HomeLand Security come barreling past us. At 11:20 we hear that the boat is on its side and taking water fast. At 1130am we are at the Verazzano Bridge ( Remember Rocky) with the tide at our backs pushing us through. We pass a ship under the Bridge See the pictures…. We arrive at the Statue of Liberty at 12:20 and begin to circle the island in heavy seas to slow down for the East River, there are many boats in the Harbor. At this point it is dangerous to take your eyes off the harbor area as the taxis and ferries and sailboats will be on a collision course with out hesitation. After getting into the East River we let the current take us down past the United Nation Building to the famous Hells Gate. Jeff and I thought it was nothing compared to Plum Gut and the Race. It was a let down and a bummer. Next time we will try it at max ebb for some excitement!

Our next run on Long Island Sound is a downwind leg at night that brought us some dangerous and tiring exhaustion. We averaged 8 to 10 knots surfing 3 to 6 foot waves. The most dangerous part of the trip was traversing this last leg , however we had quite a few landmarks to go by and the GPS. Good thing, as the rocks of New Haven Harbor we not visible to our tired eyes. We hooked up at 1051 pm on the Guest Mooring and had a good pasta dinner before hitting the sack. We had come 432 miles and were dead beat!

Ok who wants to do it on the trip Down to the Bahamas !
Sign on the dotted line…………….. Bring your night eyes you will need them. 

Atlantic City and Beyond the Second Day Off shore to Manasquan River.

We left Atlantic City at 6am. We were up at 545am. It was dark out but it was a short outlet to the Ocean , a small amount of chop coming out of the inlet but otherwise good.
After reaching the ocean the wind was blowing from the East with Heavy Rollers through out the day. No events today. Thank God! We motored three quarters of the way and the last part of the day we even got to sail. Its was great we all enjoyed it.
I drove the boat through the Manasquan River Inlet it was choppy but not like
Plum Gut on the Sound. Larger Waves and the tide was pushing us to one side.

Jeff pulled us into the first gas station and we were informed that the tide was too shallow in that area to anchor. We tried the next marina and then the nightmare started with the marina staff directing us to, too tight a slip with the river current coming at our ass. I guess they didn’t like sail boats…
The boats engines were not strong enough for the current so we settled against two
Docking posts until a marina personnel decided to help us get off the pilings.
On to the next marina which was through a railroad bridge with 14 foot clearance on either side with a 4 knot tide coming against you. Yea it was fun. We make it through and landed on the Brielle Yacht Clubs Gas Dock. The Harbor Master had to move us again to another T dock as a 70 foot boat was coming in for gas. It was our final resting place. The harbor Master took cash for the dock ( I wonder where that went??) Whip-it was glad it didn’t end up sunk in the River. Well we all had a few drinks that night and I’m glad Jeff was driving because I would have put a few more marks on the boat that afternoon.
Onward to NewYork City the armpit of the east. Rick doesn’t like my opinion of the city, oh well you can’t win them all.

Atlantic City Here we Come!!

We had a good nights sleep except the fishing boats came through at 5am. My cell phone was set for 6 am and Jeff got up at that time and went to the showers. Jeff will not be pulling sails today, his back is killing him and mine is acting up. Today the boat is cold.. Jeff starts the coffee and puts 3 inches of water on the kitchen floor with a broken gallon water bottle. Lucky Rick today, as he has to pull the sails if we get any wind. Its 632am and we leave the marina and the snake river to the open ocean. At 701am we hit open ocean but a North East Wind is in our face and we motor again. We are only making 5 knots and the tide is slowing us down. We had to tack way out to get the boat into a good long haul. It's a Beautiful sunrise this morning on the ocean. We are drinking coffee on the table and listening to the hum of the engines. I had my ear plugs in so it was great!
We are hobby horsing all the way to Atlantic City! After coffee the first event of the day was Rick who took a cold sea shower on the toilet when he opened the hatch when we were moving, duh!!! He was trying to be considerate of the crew . Even his socks got wet. Its 912 am and I am sick now with the smell of bacon and a conk on the head from the kitchen hatch ( Rick Again) "Rick wanted a view" Looks like it will be a cake walk today as its 10:08 and Atlantic City is only 3 hours away, what could happen in that time.
Yea Right. What a mistake now the toilet is busted. Rick is going over board. its 11:01 am we got hit with a rogue high wave.. I was sleeping in the back , Rick was in the kitchen and Jeff got the soaking and lost his cell phone, the computer and the tablet!!!!!
My camera got wet and my cell phone but they survived the water. Jeff at the time was calling the West Marine Man about the toilet replacement and he got put on permanent hold. Your on the Ocean Now! Dream it and it will happen! The Boat floor is full of water and we all are washing our feet and waiting for the next wave! It did not come.

We finally arrive at Atlantic City and had to wait 20 minutes for gas as the pumps were not primed because of no use (That will tell you the state of the economy) After getting our dock number and docking we then tried the toilet and Jeff pushed the Sh-T through the lines and saved the day.

Leg 4 - Day 4

19 September 2012 | Ending at Cape May

The Dinner with Monroe ended with Rick having five pieces of pie and four pieces of cake,,, holy shit... this guy can out a dent in anything...

When we returned to the boat the storm had almost passed. This morning Rick was still hungry!!

Jeff and I got up first and took showers. Then we waited for Rick for 45 minutes, Late Again!!

So we got off to a great start not knowing what the day would bring. The river to get out of the marina

is quite a deep river, some spots over 70 feet deep. It actually resembles the form of a snake.

Not too many crap pots at the mouth today(thats not a typo..). The wind was at our back so the waves were great!

The way to Cape May was uneventful except the hum of the motor. 10 minutes out of the mouth of the River,

Rick said, what do you want to eat!!! I must have gained 10lbs on this trip already, Jeff Just takes

another drink,( Milk of course). We arrived at Cape May quite quickly, the Canal was marked very well

and the Ferrys were not running so we had no navigational problems. The Canal to Cape May was only 150 feet

wide and 15 foot deep so it left no room for error. We got gas, water, and a pain in ass fuel attendant...at the first
Marina.

Thank God Jeff only had 3 glasses of Milk we had 3 inches on either side of the gas dock to spare as we are 18' and the gas dock was 18'6", good thing it wasn't windy!!.

We are looking forward to going out to the real ocean tomorrow. I guess it will be time for the

seasick pills, more beer, and wishful thinking hoping we will make it to the next dockage.

Leg 4 - Day 3

18 September 2012 | Greenwich, NJ
Jeff
We are still here at Greenwich NJ. We waited out the storm which everyone on the eastern seaboard experienced. I worked all day because we had nothing else to do.. Rick, as always, made friends with a fella named Monroe within seconds after landing yesterday, so today all 4 of us went to dinner in his car. It was good to get a day off from our long run. It was blowing like a bastard here... we saw 35knots on the wind meter (42mph).

Right now its really calm and we are getting ready for bed. If the weather looks good in the morning, I have one one call for work and we will head out for a short 35 mile run down to Cape May, NJ. There we will decide when we will start the run up the NJ coast. At this point we will not make New Haven, but we are aiming to get to at least within two days sail so I can come back down and bring it up with a new crew for a weekend.. I'll check in tomorrow!!

Leg 4 - Day 2

17 September 2012 | Greenwich, NJ
Jeff
After a 36hr straight run from Hampton, we are in the Delaware river, about 30miles from Cape May. We are up the Cohansey River, tied up to a fuel dock. The wind is starting to pick up and we are planning on spending at least two nights here until the weather dies down.

We had an awesome first all night passage up the bay and got to see a few sights that not many others get to see. We passed a fully light up cruise liner leaving port, among others.... See the pics...

Warning, the quality of these pictures has no reflection on Canon, or the camera man... shit happens when the boat is bouncing like hell.... :)

We are all pretty tired and after a few drinks, I'm ready for bed, so this is a short one for tonight, but stay tuned for more drama!

btw, I figured out the picture uploading issue with help from Pamela the blog queen!
