One Day in Town, Three Days at Anchor.

21 July 2015 | North Channel, Ontario
That seems like a good balance.

We stopped at Little Current to attend the Friday afternoon Cruisers' Net cocktail party and to reprovision. Amazingly there were people from over 50 boats at the party at the Anchor Inn. Afterwards, walking the docks, we encounter Jim and Kat from Islay Mist II, long time Canadian cruising friends, who invite us for cocktails and end up feeding us dinner!!! What a great evening catching up and getting their advice on transiting the Trent. They live on Lake Simcoe and invite us to stop there on our travels. The evening ends perfectly with ice cream from the Dairy Bar.

Our three nights anchoring out start out in Baie Finn, at our favorite "Eagle Cove" anchorage. You won't find it on a chart as that is one that we named, halfway up the Baie. After a calm night at anchor, we depart for The Pool and have a great downwind sail to the channel. We find the racing tri, Caliente, anchored in The Pool with one other boat. After breakfast onboard, we hoist anchor to beat our way out the channel, down Frazier Bay and into the Lansdowne Channel. There we can unfurl the genoa and sail all the way to the end. Remarkable!! We have now now more sailing this year than previous ones! The wind is blustery though, and Portage Couvert inner and outer anchorages are full. We opt to anchor outside and east of the green buoy and it is a perfect, calm spot.

In the morning, the wind picks up early and one the nose of course as we motor for Heywood Island anchorage. We follow the channel to the far eastern end and have the whole place to ourselves. Several swims in the teal blue waters are so refreshing, once you get used to the cool temps.

Our plan is to head west today (Tuesday), stopping in Little Current for ice, then hitting some of the North Channel anchorages before the end of the week.

Our first island anchorages were in the Berries. Sugar sand beaches, clear blue water, conch and starfish, everyday a new wonderful experience.

We are spending over a week in Bimini waiting for weather to cross to the Berry Islands (a 75 mile crossing that will require two good days). So we walk, drive, and dinghy our way around North Bimini to learn about the land and the people.

Our favorite anchorage on the eastern shore. The cove featured St Martin Point house and grounds, a 19th century home with accommodations for eighteen people, currently available as vacation rental. Dan, the caretaker invited us to explore the house and grounds.

I walked from the yacht club to the downtown area to purchase a nautical chart at the general store. Charming homes from the mid-1800s with fenced in yards and patios. Main square at City Hall has umbrella tables and chairs to enjoy the fresh air. Lots of interesting shops and restaurants, wished we could stay longer.

We took Whisper on a loop through the French River Small Craft Route with Russ and Lisa onboard. Uproar can't do the route because of depth...and maybe width!
