A Week of Sun and Wind

29 July 2015 | North Channel, Ontario
WOW so far this year, we have sailed more miles than in all three past years combined! Weather has been predictable, sunny warm days with gentle breeze in the morning turns into sunny and WINDY in the afternoon. That is great when headed away from the wind...but when headed into it, that can be interesting......

We stopped in Little Current for ice on our way west last week (Bill, Sue and me) heading for Logan Bay on Clapperton Island. Wind was on the nose when we left, and built as we traveled out of the channel. It was pretty bouncy so we closed all the ports and hatches and secured all the stuff that was loose below. The wind built..... 20+ knots, 4-6 foot seas... with higher gusts and larger occasional waves. Really no problem for Lake Michigan sailors, but we are on vacation, not a boat delivery! Oh oh..... the dinghy decided to take off on her own (broken shackle) so a rescue was needed. Once secured back to the boat, we congratulated ourselves on executing our MOB practice for the year.

And Logan Bay was way too far away and too far upwind, so we rounded Amedroz Island and headed into the calm waters there. Oh, I neglected to mention the forward hatch was not secured properly and EVERYTHING was wet. A week later, we are still finding things to dry out.

On the other hand, when the wind is at our back, it is glorious. We were joined three days ago by Russ and Lisa on Uproar and we both had a marvelous spinnaker run between Eagle Island and Sturgeon Cove. The west wind is bringing us warm water too, as our three swims testify. Russ says the water was 81 degrees.

We are now in Little Current, celebrating the Cruisers' Net Rendezvous last night with new and old friends, and working on a leaky dinghy today. We've got a bit of weather coming through, so we are hanging out in the air conditioned comfort of Uproar, instead of the 95 degree temps outside.

Our first island anchorages were in the Berries. Sugar sand beaches, clear blue water, conch and starfish, everyday a new wonderful experience.

We are spending over a week in Bimini waiting for weather to cross to the Berry Islands (a 75 mile crossing that will require two good days). So we walk, drive, and dinghy our way around North Bimini to learn about the land and the people.

Our favorite anchorage on the eastern shore. The cove featured St Martin Point house and grounds, a 19th century home with accommodations for eighteen people, currently available as vacation rental. Dan, the caretaker invited us to explore the house and grounds.

I walked from the yacht club to the downtown area to purchase a nautical chart at the general store. Charming homes from the mid-1800s with fenced in yards and patios. Main square at City Hall has umbrella tables and chairs to enjoy the fresh air. Lots of interesting shops and restaurants, wished we could stay longer.

We took Whisper on a loop through the French River Small Craft Route with Russ and Lisa onboard. Uproar can't do the route because of depth...and maybe width!
