The Big Apple and More
22 September 2015 | New York City
We have the best seat in the house.... on the Hudson River at 79th Street in west Manhattan. Yes, it is a bit bouncy a times and yes, we have to dink in whenever we want to take in the sites, go shopping or dine out, but the first night was free and subsequent nights are costing us $30 a night ..... TOTAL. That includes 24x7 security, dinghy dock, free washer and dryer, free ice, and WIFI for a minimal charge.... in NYC!!! We've been so busy there hasn't been much time to blog, so I'll cover our Erie Canal and Hudson River trip out of order and in a different blog.
Our first check point in NYC was the Statue of Liberty so we sailed directly there upon our arrival on Saturday. It was a sunny, blue sky kind of day so photo opps were plentiful. It is way cool sailing your own boat up to the Lady.
Sunday afternoon was really windy with ripping current in the river so we were not able to get off the boat and into the dink until late afternoon (although we have a new sturdy dinghy, we still have the underpowered engine which can't make much headway in the strong currents). We walked up to 79th and Broadway where we found a great little restaurant for dinner just two doors away from the sports bar where we watched the Packers hammer the SeaHawks. A midnight walk back to the boat for the five of us (Uproar and Whisper crew) had a surprisingly safe and secure feeling.
Yesterday we took Russ' advice and booked a Grayline bus tour of the city (you know those open air on top tour buses). It was a great way to get a feel for all the aspects of Manhattan. I am amazed at how big and crowded and old and under construction constantly it is. The tour allowed 'hop offs' so we hopped at the 911 Memorial. The two reflecting pools, with the names of all the casualties engraved on the rim, are a somber tribute to that horrifying day. We finished off the day with a walk through Times Square at dusk, which is both magical and overwhelmingly fanatical.
We have been blessed with great weather...we're still in tees and shorts.... under a bright sunny high that we hope persists through the weekend when we will be again on the move south.
