Ah! New Bottom Paint

We just repainted the bottom, finally switching from the dull-but-functional black to bright and flashy and hopefully also functional red.

July 4 - Turning Around the U.S.S. Constitution

"Old Ironsides" out for her July 4th trip to greet well-wishers and to turn her in her berth.

Goodbye, Manhattan

06 April 2012 | Cole Bay, St.Maarten, West Indies
When we first arrived in St. Martin at the end of spring last year (wow, is it really almost a year ago?!?) and went exploring, John noticed a wall with some striking art on it quietly decaying behind underbrush. It was midway between the two big marine stores on the island. The images stayed with him, and he watched for them and slowed his steps a bit each time he passed by to take a look.

Two weeks ago, a bulldozer arrived. On the first day it looked like only the back of the building behind the wall was being taken down, and the undergrowth in front cleaned away. It was the first time you could clearly see all of the wall as a whole, with carved Egyptian hieroglyphic styled images all over the front of the building.

Alas, we know how this story ends. The wall is gone now, making way for a condo building. I asked one of the workers if he remembered what this place was in its day. He thinks it was a night-club called The Manhattan. Hopefully the new building will be as inspiring as the old one.
