Joined the Navy Again

I've been terribly lacking regarding keeping up with this since we've gotten cell phone coverage. So sorry!

Last Leg to the US

We launched out of Port Lucaya, North Bahamas last evening. Our 17:00 start turned into an 18:00 start when we discovered the main halyard had somehow wrapped the hailing horn and would not allow the main sail to raise. We returned to the marina area and Ryan volunteered to go up the mast to free it. A quick job and we were off again... Then about 21:00 we got hit by a squall. Winds came out of the north at about 35 kts. LL and Marsha were on watch, but fortunately they got me up just in time to get the sails furled before the wind hit! We ended up motoring most of the night until about 03:00, due to fluky winds. Today is nice- cumulus clouds with some thumderheads building on the horizons. We're under the full main and genaker and making mid 7's for speed. Gotta love it! At this pace we'll make Charleston in less that 48 hours. That will give everybody a day to get their land legs back and maybe do a Charleston tour before the creww heads en-mass to SEA, leaving the capt all alone. Still haven't decided if I'm going to try to continue to move the boat northward ar just leave in in Charleston for a few weeks. Any volunteers for crew? Send your resume via email!

Race Week

08 March 2009 | Simpson Bay, St. Maarten
Casey
Well, the action has surely picked up around here this week. It's the week of the Heineken Regatta. This annual race draws lots of boats and is a big deal here. Everyone was worried that it would be a flop this year due to the economic situation. The race managed to draw 220 boats. I don't know if that's up or down from past years, but sure sounds like a lot of boats to me! A few of the regulars apparently haven't come, but this sure is an international event! There are crews here from everywhere, speaking a myriad of languages...
As for us, Ron and I have been working on the list of boat projects non-stop. It's been a bit frustrating trying to get things done here. Seems everything takes twice as long as it should- especially running down parts and pieces!
Laurilea is enjoying the sun most days. She likes to go to the beach and work on her tan, which really is what this life is about, right? It's sometimes easy to forget that life isn't about getting things done, but about the doing of those things. In the evenings we seem to be the social boat, mostly because Laurilea loves to have people aboard, but also because we have the space to entertain...
My son, Ryan, and his girlfriend, Marlena, have been here for a few days now. They have pretty much entertained themselves; checking out some of the closer beaches around. Laurilea and Marlena have done a bit of shopping too. A couple of days ago they went looking for a big floppy sun hat for Marlena, and Laurilea came home with a cute sundress as well!
We're planning to go out for a week or so in a couple of days, but that depends on whether the wind moderates somewhat. It's been blowing up to 30 knots this week, which really kicks up the waves and makes for an uncomfortable ride. In fact, yesterday they even cancelled a couple of the races due to excess wind...
