Wild Kingdom

I'm going to try to post the next few posts remotely from the SSB radio, but I won't know if they go through until we get to a wifi in Cabo San Lucas.... We left Turtle Bay this morning at around 7:30 for an 8 am start from the mouth of the bay. Lots of boats left early, hoping to make Bahia Santa Maria (outside Magdelena Bay) before nightfall on the second day. We tried to sail across the start line and soon after doused the jib and powered up the iron wind. Light winds were reported inshore and out to sea, from 2 - 7 kts variable, so only the heartiest or lightest actually tried to sail. BUT, it was WILD KINGDOM out there! The radio chatter reported each sighting, catch, method of catching, cleaning and cooking everything, but the MOST interesting to me was the calamari! I guess you have to tantalize them with the lure, gently jerk it to hook them, then manage to keep the ink off the boat, filet and saute. We saw our first flying fish pop up out of the water, fly along side, make a U turn and fly some more before flopping back in the water. Cool! They were catching Yellow Fin, Mahi Mahi, Dorado, Bonito (maybe), squid and green tailed mermaids. Recipies were flying across the airwaves! We, on the other hand, have caught the seaweed with which to wrap our tuna once we get it!!! Wasabe is ready and waiting..... We have the sails up, but can't sail up to the 6 knots desired, so we're motoring towards the waypoint and estimate anchorage at 9 pm tomorrow night....not so good. We might slow down and actually sail to bring us into the bay or speed up to get there in the twilight.....so much for 10 days of sailing.....bah humbug....
