Today we are heading to the Keys by air.
We had an eventul week.Bill will be moving on to Antigua to Language school. We had an eventul week.
My favorite adventure this week was Rio Aguas Caliente. It was a one hour dingy ride, continuted with a 30 minute walk through farm land, to a path into the woods, unveiling the most serene waterfall forming a clear jade pool. The water flowed from two sources one hot over the falls and one cool stream feeding into it below. Heavenly for sure. Hiking on top of the falls was fresh clay for the spa treatment of the day. If you were to follow the falls up stream you would come to caves. This I learned afterwards so maybe we will go back for a look.
I also visited another Mayan ruin site which contained mostly estalas one of which is the largest estala in Guatemala, weighing approximately 65 tons and 12 meters high. The carving on these estalas were well preserved and finey detailed telling the story of the kings life. Interesting told was that only the king was allowed to walk the temple. Dancing , snakes, the jaguar and frog were often depicted in the stone estala. It was the royalty that danced, shown by the feathers in the top of the crown. The snake represented wisdom and everlasting life as seen in its molting. The jaguar was strength and the frog fertility. The people were to worship the estela. The little windows built into the temples are to watch the moon . The Mayans count their days, site of main temple, you can see where the idea for our stadiums came from. Once again the La Cieba tree was spoken of as the 3 labels of life, the underworld ,the human world and the upper world. The roots of the la Cieba grow 30 to 40 meters underground. You can also see vine roots above the ground, shooting up into the tree, this is how the Mayans saw communication between the underworld to human and upper world. Important to the Mayan was corn and chocolate from the fruit of the cocoa tree. Also jade is known to be scared to the Mayan and can be green ,white or black.
One more adventure was a dingy ride taking Bill to see the port town of Livingston at the mouth of the Rio Dulce. We passed the spectacular canyon walls extending some some 300 to 400 feet high. The day was breezy and cool with some rain. Livingston looked particularly clean after being in Fronteras for the past month.07/9/23
